Didier Astruc was born in Versailles and studied at the University of Rennes including his two doctorate theses in organometallic chemistry with Prof. René Dabard. In 1977, he was a NATO post-doctoral Fellow at MIT with Prof. Richard R. Schrock. After his first thesis, he became Assistant, then Master Lecturer at the Technological Institute of Saint-Nazaire, and after his post-doc, CNRS Fellow and CNRS Research Director in Rennes. In 1983, he was appointed full Professor of Chemistry at the University of Bordeaux and Director of the Catalysis and Nanosciences Group. In 1990-1, he did a sabbatical leave at UC Berkeley with Prof. Peter K. C. Vollhardt. He was President of the Coordination Chemistry Division of the French Chemical Society from 2001 to 2004 and Member of the National CNRS Committee from 2001 to 2008.
His present research interests are in nanocatalysis, sensors, and nanomedicine.
He met Prof. Alan Cowley FRS at an Organometallic Gordon Conference in 1984 and at several memorable occasions in Chile. Friendship also developed with collaborations and mutual visits at Imperial College, London, UT Austin and Bordeaux.
