Colin D. Abernethy
Professor of Chemistry, Sarah Lawrence College
Colin Abernethy received a BSc (Honors) degree in Chemistry from the University of Durham in England. He conducted his Ph.D. research on the synthesis and magnetic properties of nitride and oxide cluster compounds of vanadium. In 1997, he moved to the University of Texas at Austin to work with Professors Alan Cowley and Mike White as part of the Science and Technology Center. His research with Alan involved the study of the reactivity of N-heterocyclic carbenes and imidazolium halides towards metallocenes and other organometallic complexes. On completion of his postdoc with Alan, he worked with Cameron Jones on the synthesis and reactivity of indium hydrides before beginning a lectureship at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland. In 2003, Colin returned to the United States and is now a Full Professor at Sarah Lawrence College in New York
