Richard A. Kemp
Professor of Chemistry, The University of New Mexico
Principal Member of the Technical Staff, Sandia National Laboratories
Rick is a Full Professor of Chemistry at the University of New Mexico and a Principal Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories, where he has been since 2001. He spent the first part of his career doing homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis in industry for Shell Development Company, the research arm of Shell Oil Company (15 years), and Union Carbide Corporation (5 years). In addition to catalysis, his research interests include CO2 utilization reactions, synthetic inorganic and organometallic chemistry, all aspects of main group chemistry, nanomaterials useful for tracking underground fluid flows in reservoirs, and novel ionic liquid solvents for use in space vehicles. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from Texas Tech University in 1978, and his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry in 1981 at the University of Texas, Austin, under the mentorship of Professor Alan H. Cowley. Unlike Alan, Rick apparently has trouble holding onto a job.
